Gothic TARDIS Console
For my Final Major Project at university, I reimagined the iconic Doctor Who TARDIS console through the lens of Gothic cathedral architecture. The design process began with a series of concept sketches exploring how elements like vaulted arches, stained glass, and ornate detailing could inform the console’s form.
I then developed 3D models in Blender to experiment with scale, symmetry, and lighting, refining the silhouette and visual impact.
These renders helped visualise how the console would sit within a larger space and ensured the design was both dramatic and cohesive. Finally, I produced detailed technical drawings to resolve proportions, layout, and component integration—bridging imaginative concept work with the practical requirements of a full-scale, functional design.
The construction of the TARDIS console involved careful craftsmanship, primarily using wood and acrylic as the base materials. I meticulously hand-finished stone and metal detailing to bring texture and authenticity to the piece. The motorised central column was assembled entirely from laser cut acrylic, imitating the look of stained glass, which were illuminated to highlight symbolic imagery of time, serving as both a technical and thematic centrepiece.
Every element—from engraved brass controls to arched panels—was handcrafted and thoughtfully integrated to ensure both visual impact and mechanical functionality. This hands-on process combined traditional finishing techniques with precise mechanical assembly, resulting in a piece that is not only striking but also fully operational. This design-led approach was recognised with the EPH Creative Moments of WOW award, celebrating the project's originality, ambition, and visual impact.
